Tuesday Plan

Departure and Travel

We will leave Norton Grange immediately after breakfast, preferably by 0915. Full driving instructions are in a printable document. We drive 7 miles to Mottistone on the south side of the island. This should take about 15 minutes. We park in the National Trust car park for Mottistone House, which was free for all users when we last visited a few years ago. Although Mottistone House has toilets, they are available only to visitors, and you must book in advance.

The Walk

We hope to be walking by 0945. The walk is about 4 miles, and although we go quite high the gradients are easy. We start by heading to the coast, then follow the cliff top path with views over the English Channel. We then go inland, and climb slowly to the Long Stone (but this can be omitted). This is an ancient Moot Stone, from which the name Mottistone derives. We end with an easy descent to the car park. Click for a map and for a risk assessment of the walk.

Distance and Time Estimates

Full walk 6.2km 3.9m (1:55 to 2:35)
 Omitting Longstone 5.2km 3.2m (1:40 to 2:10)

Lunch

Lunches may be available in the garden of Mottistone House, but if you are not a National Trust member you will have to pay for admission. There is a pub in Brighstone, which is a short distance east of Mottistone.

The Afternoon

We have made no specific plans for Tuesday afternoon, and we don’t all have to do the same thing. For ideas, click the Free Time button.
